Sound analysis: blog tasks
1) Find a film clip on YouTube that uses sound in an interesting way. Analyse the use of sound, making sure you use the key language we have learned about sound in film:
- Diegetic and non-diegetic sound
- Parallel and contrapuntal sound
- Sound bridges
Remember to discuss/analyse all the different types of sound present in the clip:
- Music
- Dialogue
- Voiceover
- Sound effects
You also need to highlight or put in bold any use of media language.
In Up (2009), the opening scene uses non-diegetic sound, including the background music, which matches the emotions shown on screen. At the beginning, we hear the diegetic sound effects of a camera taking a photo and people clapping, which makes the wedding feel more realistic and happy. There is very little dialogue or voiceover, as the story is mainly told through the music and visual iconography . As Carl and Ellie get older and face sad moments, the music becomes slower and more emotional, creating parallel sound because it matches what is happening on screen. The music also creates a sound bridge by continuing between different scenes and showing the passage of time. There is no contrapuntal sound because the music constantly matched with the mood of the scenes. Overall, the sound helps the audience understand Carl and Ellie’s relationship and makes their story more emotional.
