Life On Mars 2006

 1) How does the sound help establish the setting and time period

The sounds in the extract establish a setting of 1970s. They use up beat fast paced non- diegetic soundtrack to mimic and parody the typical police show in the 1970s. The dialogue of the police officer is also a typical stereotyped way of British officers talking, they were rude and grumpy to the citizens but also cracked jokes.

2) Note the use of diegetic and non-diegetic sound in the clip. What impact does the sound have on the audience?

The diegetic sounds convey that there will be an element of comedy in the show but also that it is a typical crime show. There was a car chase sequence which is a typical conventions of  a show of this genre. The diegetic sounds of the cars and the screeching it made, makes the scene tense and makes the audience wonder why the car is chasing another. The non diegetic soundtrack also adds to the tension of the scene despite it being somewhat contrapuntal. The fast paced music keeps the audience on edge and wondering on what will happen. The comedy within the dialogue conveys to the audience that the show is a mimic of what the typical 1970s police drama would look like. The contemporary audience would have known this.
