Mise-en-scene blog tasks
1) Find a distinctive still image and write an analysis of the mise-en-scene. Use each of the aspects you've learned in the lesson.
The mise-en-scene shows how this scene is full of terror. The costume, mask, makes the audience recognise the movie and the character and immediately understand that it is a horror movie. The high-key lighting doesn't make the still image look more frightening however it allows us to see the ghost face mask and understand why the girl is making that expression. The makeup allows us to understand that the girl was probably out and was having fun, presumably with her friends before ghost face showed up. 2) Find TWO film or TV extracts on YouTube from different genres (e.g. horror, sci-fi, costume drama). Embed them in your blogpost and write a comparison of the mise-en-scene in each.
Barbie uses bright colours like pink and high-key lighting in order to make the world look like perfection. The bright settings and the happy facial expressions make a perfect fit for the fun comedy genre Barbie upholds. Contrastingly, Batman uses darker colours and settings and also low key lighting to create a mysterious, ominous atmosphere and setting. The contrast between the costumes of both portrays how both media are completely different genres and so they explore different themes. Barbie uses bright props while Batman uses more realistic colours and props. These choices make Gotham seem more intimidating that the land that Barbie resides in. Furthermore, in Barbie the characters facial expressions are all more cheerful and expressive, while in Batman everything about their face is serious. This creates a suitable undertone for both movies, Barbie is intended to be light hearted and cheerful, whereas Batman is supposed to be centred around vigilance. This also previews the actions carried out in each respective movie: barbie contains lovable actions like hugging while Batman hes pure violence. This can be seen as actors body language. The mise en scene allows us to tell the narrative of the movie, if you don't know batman at all you would be able to guess that he is some sort of vigilante who fight crime. This is very noticeable from the mise en scene. The props like the guns in Batman all reinforce the narrative and the themes of violence, also the neutral and low angles used for Batman make him seem more intimidating, not to show how hes scary but rather to portray his power and authority. The low key lighting also enforces this as it casts dark shadows on his face that keep his vigilante vibes going. The high angle of Barbie during the establishing shot shows the light hearted nature of the film and how its seen as Paradise. The actors expression while they were dancing further emphasises on how Barbie is the epitome of perfection.
